The photographs

After becoming interested in working with the natural and exploring the idea of working and creating with food waste, I began photographing any food waste that was created in the house hold. Some issues arose with this way of creating art because of the unpredictability of when there will be food waste and if that food waste was photograph worthy. For example one day the only food waste was rotten coriander that although sounds interesting in reality was just dark sludge that looked like mud, essentially formless and not particularly pleasant to work with. This being said on other days I had a lot to pick from, onion peel, lemon rinds, rotten or going off berries. I began by photographing them really close up in an attempt to disguise the scale and subject from the viewer. I tried to highlight the intricate lines, whimsical and ethereal qualities. The results where really interesting. You could no longer recognise the subject and yet the photos have a familiar feel to them. I wanted to further highlight the shapes and symmetry and edited the photos to bring out more colour and form. The end photos were much more effective than original unedited and got me interested in further abstracting the fruit to create a more engaging and seductive photo collection that is unrecognisable as food waste.
