How physically reconnecting with the Material aspect of nature has give me the compassion and awe of its power to want to help save the world.
I talk a lot in my project about “reconnecting with nature” and this concept is wide and vast, often abstracted into my digital art world. But what I usually mean is talking the time to consciously acknowledge, be in, and observe the nature that surrounds me. Now this can be seen in many different ways, sometimes it’s simply just sitting in a park surrounding by trees, other times it’s looking intensely out my window as the sunsets, the birds singing and the trees waving and dancing in the breeze. Through making a conscious effort to involve nature in my day to day, to acknowledge its existence it’s taught me how important each aspect of it is to my daily quality of life. I now cherish its power and have a much stronger compassion for its well being, that I didn’t recognise or see as important before. It’s inspired an intense yearning to find solutions, however small, to the huge problems the world is facing. From falling back in love with nature it led me to research what I can do to help. Small actions like washing out your baked bean tins before recycling them, picking up 5 pieces of litter every time you go to the beach, using Recyclable bottles and straws, being conscious of the amount of paper, plastic and packaging I use or waste (and trying to reduce it). All these things are so small but can have a big impact if enough people join in on doing them. I thoroughly believe that education is the key to saving out planet. I hope to try and incorporate education into my practice. However I never want my art to become preachy, or pushy. I want people to want to learn and be interested, seek the information themselves instead of feeling like I am telling them what to do.
through my art I want to inspire people to explore their own natural environment, and hopefully fall in love. The more people that fall in love with the natural world the better, because those are the people that will help save it. My work looks to explore the natural world through the lens of residential or urban spaces, showing that nature can be Accesible AND beautiful. Hopefully it will inspire at least one person to explore the nature Accesible to them, and who knows maybe they’ll fall in love like I did.
