While looking at the rubbish of others it got me interested in my own habits and contribution to excess waste. I am far from perfect when it comes to waste. But I want to improve. I sometimes buy fast fashion items and I cant always afford to buy free range or eco friendly products. I use plastic bags, I don't always remember to bring my own and by products with plastic on them.
However I want to learn and I want to change. I recycle everything that I can, I shop in charity shops due to budget which reduces the amount of fast fashion that's being bought and worn before being thrown away for the next new craze. I still buy and have bought fast fashion and until recently was not educated on the horrific effects of the industry. From poor working conditions ending in thousands of deaths, to the amount of plastic and waste that ends up on landfill and in our seas, the fast fashion industry is very detrimental to our planet and environment. I now try and donate any clothing I do not use or have grown out of. Throughout my whole life the only reason I have thrown out an item of clothing was if it was beyond repairable or would not be accepted in donation.
One area that I do wish I could reduce my waste is my medication and medication packaging. I did the math and use between 30-45 cardboard boxes a month, each with 3-5 plastic or metal pill trays where the capsule/tablet is. The cardboard is recyclable but often the foil and plastic containers are not. I want to work out away that I can reduce my waste or even put it to good use. In the video I have blurred out medication names but the boxes shown are from just 4 days. I'm hoping to use them for craft or sculpture, reflect my themes in physical form. At the moment I'm struggling to use the card as they are stiff and not malleable.
