After exploring the subject of anamorphism, my interest around spaces between spaces grew. I was really interested in the relationship between man and nature. And as I broke that down on a physical level I started noticing and exploring the container in which i view nature from. Student accommodation, my own space, the container temporarily for my life being a portal from which I look out into the world from. Something so unchanging, fixed looking out into the ever moving, rhythmic and evolving world that nature provides. To convey this I tried to keep a somewhat structural sense of my own space within the collages, this being the “frame” if you will, to encapsulate the nature that is outside of its grasp. These combinations and collages really interest me because of the collaboration between the two worlds. The space shown is in between, with exclusions and aspects removed but still somewhat fixed in position. A way to reflect the current situation of being stuck, looking outward and moving forward but still being in an in between space. I became really interested in the works of Robert Smithson, with his “photo Markers”. The contrast in images showing an image of a space being places in a new photograph of a space. The contrast in perspective, tone and angles are really effective in framing the space. Space is something that I continually try to document within my own work. The inclusion and or exclusion of features or areas is something I want to experiment with. In Smithson's work his images give two opposing perspectives of the same space. A similar idea that I'm trying to emulate with my collages. Perspective can vary widely from a tiny movement, to mindset, to angle. The combination of perspectives can show small variations in environments that would have previously gone unnoticeable. Inconsistencies and variations even show in photos taken from the same angle is what I'm really interesting in capturing. The ever changing evolving relationship between the worlds that never truly meet, but symbiotically coexist along side each other. Similarly the works of Uta Barth also interest me for this reason. Her work perfectly captures the longing feeling of being inside looking out into a different work within her photographs titles "Nowhere near. Moving forward I would like to experiment with scale of the works to create either a more immersive, or even more intricate and intimate effect depending on the size of the collages.
